A new chapter for Chicago’s culinary landscape is unfolding with the opening of Nafsi 1916, a soul food restaurant that officially launched this week at the South Shore Cultural Center. The restaurant celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, marking a significant moment for both the community and the history of the location.
Nafsi 1916 promises to deliver what its owners describe as "elevated soul food," honoring the rich traditions of Black cuisine while incorporating modern culinary techniques. The name "Nafsi" is derived from the Swahili word for "soul," which resonates deeply with the restaurant's mission to celebrate Black culture through food. This commitment to cultural authenticity is evident in the menu, which features classic soul food dishes reimagined with a contemporary twist, using locally sourced ingredients and innovative cooking methods.
Located at 7059 S. South Shore Drive, the restaurant occupies a space steeped in history. Once a white-only country club, the South Shore Cultural Center has transformed into a vibrant hub for the community, showcasing events in its ballroom, theater, and solarium since the Chicago Park District took over in 1975. The opening of Nafsi represents a powerful reclamation of space, inviting residents to enjoy delicious meals in an environment that was once exclusionary.
Owner Donnell Digby, a proud South Shore resident, articulated his vision during the opening ceremony that, as a Southsider from South Shore, he wanted to bring some soul back to a space that once wouldn’t have allowed them to be there. He added that they were bringing some elevated soul food to South Shore. His passion for the community and commitment to quality cuisine are evident in the restaurant's offerings, which reflect the flavors and traditions of Black culinary heritage.
Digby’s approach goes beyond simply serving food; it’s about creating an experience that fosters community connection. The interior of Nafsi combines modern design elements with a warm, inviting atmosphere, encouraging diners to relax and savor their meals while celebrating their cultural roots.
Nafsi is positioned as a crucial addition to the South Shore area, which has seen residents spend approximately $29 million annually outside the neighborhood on food and drink. Local leaders, including South Shore Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tonya Trice, express optimism that Nafsi will attract more visitors to the community and encourage additional businesses to consider South Shore.
“This is historic,” Trice noted. Everyone desires to be able to have dinner or a glass of wine with lunch at their neighborhood restaurant while strolling there. It is anticipated that Nafsi would act as an anchor for future development, encouraging both residents and visitors to invest in the local economy.
As the South Shore community embraces this new dining option, the restaurant is expected to contribute significantly to local culture and commerce. Digby’s commitment extends beyond just food; he envisions Nafsi as a place for gatherings, celebrations, and community engagement.
“Every other corridor has large amounts of restaurants and outdoor space,” Digby pointed out. “We need more where we live.” His vision includes hosting events that highlight local artists, musicians, and cultural celebrations, creating a multifaceted space that serves as a cultural hub for the neighborhood.
The success of Nafsi could pave the way for further investments and developments in the area, creating a more vibrant neighborhood with a rich culinary scene. As word spreads and the restaurant begins to establish its identity, it may also inspire other entrepreneurs to explore opportunities within South Shore, further enhancing the local economy and fostering a sense of pride among residents.
The opening of Nafsi 1916 at the South Shore Cultural Center is more than just the launch of a new restaurant; it represents a meaningful step towards reclaiming space, celebrating cultural heritage, and revitalizing a community. As Nafsi welcomes its first patrons, it stands ready to become a cherished local institution, fostering connections and nourishing the soul of South Shore. With its commitment to quality, community engagement, and cultural celebration, Nafsi 1916 is poised to make a lasting impact on both the culinary landscape and the heart of the South Shore community.
