The fate of Lower Shaker Lake, on the Shaker Heights–Cleveland Heights border (“‘If you want the lake, pay for the lake’,” Today in Ohio podcast, Sept. 22), is the focus of ongoing talks between the communities and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) after an Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) report (File No. 1314-001, Oct. 18, 2024) warned of potential downstream flooding.
The ODNR report identifies two risk points: overflow of the earthen dam (built by the Shakers in 1836) at the lake’s northeast corner; and the sandstone dam spillway feeding Doan Creek.
